...Starchitect have more in common with Converge and Textures than Yes or Pink Floyd.
... They play a very oft-kilter riff heavy sound that varies between whatever time signature they prefer. They also can be quite melodic when they wish.

Description/Reviews
The Astonishing is a much more accessible album than Dream Theater has become known for the past decade or so. First of all, it consists of all very short and concise songs. Every song of the 34 songs is its own work, with a beginning and an end – with the notable exception of one track which flows into the next seamlessly. This also means that the music is much more constrained. For the people looking for long epics with extended sections of soloing and back and forth between instrumental dueling instruments, there is very little of that here. In my opinion, this allows the focus be on the story. ...
This is the most varied Dream Theater album released to date. Where else can you find an album that goes from ballad to theatrical prog metal tango, to melodic rock, with bag pipe sections, violin sections, 20s swing sections that go straight into blast beats, to soaring guitar solos, beautiful piano pieces and an orchestra that just embellishes the music to a level above all else.

Vaults of Zin "Kadath"

Country: USA
Genre(s): Experimental, Psychedelic, Zeuhl, Avant Prog
Format: digital, cassette
Release date: January 2016 (digital), March 21, 2016 (cassette)
Tracklist
1. Amduat (13:35)
2. Mons Atanua (7:01)
3. Anasazi (3:25)
4. Lankotan (4:03)
5. Moongate / Heart Girt With A Serpent (22:03)

Total time 50:07

Line-up
Rob Buttrum – drums

Greg Dixon – guitar, electric violin

Shane Hutchinson – bass, vocals

Stephen Lucas – synthesizer

Description/Reviews
Rather than a straight-forward assault, Kadath features the complex songwriting of a 70’s progressive rock band. The group rounds out this approach with heavy guitars, a prominent synth attack, and aggressive vocals. Some of the singing is in the so-called “cookie monster” style, which can be hit or miss with some listeners.  Nonetheless, two of the five tracks on Kadath are instrumental, and the vocals are not a major part of the other three.
Perhaps the band’s most apparent influence is late-70’s Magma. The fourth track, Lankotan, in particular, exhibits low-frequency angular rhythms and synth weirdness that would be at home on the latter group’s Udu Wudu release.

Description/Reviews
As usual the concise nature of the songs pays dividends and it sounds stunningly right through a decent set of speakers, the detail inherent in the music of Lazuli coming to life, the deep bass after a stripped back voice and piano start to Le temps est à la rage being a case in point. After setting the scene quite beautifully the band up the ante whilst keeping firm control of the tempo. The basis sounds like something that Fish himself might have come up with but the uniquely Lazuli details are what make it fly, an extended and sinuey solo from Gédéric Byar playing it out.

Description/Reviews
The Illusion's Reckoning is a concept album which flows more like a film score than a more typically linear piece. The album's journey is painted with far reaching audio moodscapes, which in their diversity, purposely echo thoughtful lyrical themes. The album is delivered in a predominantly crossover-progressive rock package, but at times takes on a hard rock, contemporary, retro, and even acoustic, folksy twist…

Akee Kazmaier:  Bass
Didi Holzner:  Keyboards

Description/Reviews
First up is the title track, 'Liquid Sun', which jumps straight in with some spacey effects over the easy flow of the guitar, bass and drums, conjuring up visions of some desolate planet at the furthest reaches of the cosmos. As the track progresses the guitar becomes more urgent, driving things forward. A nice mid-tempo space track. Next up is 'Spaceship Breakdown' which begins with a throat being cleared and some acoustic guitar before the keyboards and guitar proper join in. In the background are some dense but lush washes of synth giving the track a kosmische feel. Things get heavier as the track goes on, the riffs become almost Sabbath like and the synths add a nice organ feel to it and throughout the drums are rock solid. By the end it has become a space/acid jam. The album's magnum opus is the last track, 'Black Hole' at just over 21 minutes in length. It starts in a laid back manner with just synth and guitar playing a relatively simple melody. After the bass and drums join proceedings it becomes heavier with some nice delay on the guitar. It is an engrossing track and the 21 minutes fly by in the company of spacey effects and synth lines... space rock at its best.

Description/Reviews
“Timelapse” is a personal and original synthesis of many post-rock, instrumental and experimental rock sounds of music history. KOVLO’s music moves between romance and anger, hope and despair, creating a melancholic and anxious soundtrack for the contemporary, the past and the future world crisis.
“Timelapse” evokes time, time that passes and can’t be stopped, time that can be recreated with music. Each song title recalls an event that occurred during the birthday of each band member: “Walesa” Lech Walesa who becomes president of Poland (1990), “Opec raid” Carlos the Jackal who attacks the Opec meeting (1975), “The Dakota killing” the end of John Lennon (1980), “Suez” the reopening of the channel (1975), “Lake Nyos” the volcano that kills thousands of people (1986). Every song is a movement of time, a flow that gives the chance to the listener to explore feelings, emotions, images and ideas from the present, the future and the past.

Description/Reviews
As always in the world of Ulver, influences are disparate and diverse, yet as Rygg notes, “It’s quite tributary in a way, there are clear nods to sounds from the past.” Many of these dwell in progressive, electronic and krautrock realms, heralding a lifelong love within the band for the music of the 70s – the fiery mantras of ‘Om Hanumate Namah’ and the motorik drive of ‘Cromagnosis’ draw an astral trajectory between the propulsion of Kraftwerk/Neu! and the ritualistic intensity of prime Amon Düül II, whilst the spirits of both Klaus Schulze and John Carpenter are audible in the electronic soundscapes of ‘Desert/Dawn’, not to mention the Bernard Herrmann touch in the closing ‘Solaris’. Even when the band revisits an earlier gem from 2000’s Perdition City album, as on ‘Nowhere (Sweet Sixteen)’, its reinvigorated by their expansive and emotionally charged approach. (Jimmy Martin)

Description/Reviews
Borknagar do what they do best, epic progressive metal laced with black metal. “When Chaos Calls” has all of that, blast beats, massive chords and a dual harsh and clean vocal. One of the reasons Borknagar is so great is that they understand the importance of melody, in addition to the overall heaviness.

Description/Reviews
Revenge is one of those records that sees a combination of disparate feeling influences coming together to create a album that is at once cohesive but also diverse enough to stay interesting. Beyond that though - Revenge has a fascinating execution - some moments truly shining and others falling flat. It creates an interesting listening experience and one that shows us what the band has been building towards. While yes - these guys are relatively new you can till hear oodles of potential here - it's just a matter of cracking through.

Description/Reviews
Influenced by such varied Artists as NEUROSIS, RUSH, KING CRIMSON, BLUT AUS NORD, IMMOLATION, CONVERGE or MASTODON, the incredible UK-based band LATITUDES proudly deliver, with "Old Sunlight", their deepest, most expansive and forward-thinking work to date.
Looking inward for inspiration, these talented musicians present a powerfully unique record: riff-heavy and devastating, restless and condensed, melodic and atmospheric, imbued with unrelenting forward motion.
"Old Sunlight" is an exciting, fascinating and relentless piece of semi- instrumental Cinematic Metal in its more noble expression, cleverly technical and complex without being over-worked - a captivating structure of monstrously heavy riffs and haunting mellifluous vocals surrounded by an impressive maze of curving and twisting melodies.
LATITUDES, with this fantastic third album, have created a sterling work of genre-spanning contemporary Metal. Anyone who enjoys pure musicality and progressive musicianship in tandem with the atmospheric and filmic aspects of instrumental metal should give this careful listening
