Description/Reviews
Rapheumet's Well is a complex blend of metal and symphonic composition which chronicles the fictional multiverse of ancient sentinels known as the "Atai". Incorporating aggressive metal rhythms with epic symphonic melodies, each song progressively paints another chapter in this climactic and dark saga. Rapheumet's Well aims at writing and constructing music and unique story contents that give the listener a peek into the depth of a rich and more broad story that the band has envisioned.

Description/Reviews
The CD starts off with the long multipart Leviathan Suite and a long spacey intro before the main musical theme kicks in. This is a beautiful floating track with a lot of moods, mellotron and female vocals. The main long mid-section is a great synthesizer solo and then they return to the main vocal theme and melody again. At about 12½ mins it really picks up with a more intense guitar line and a organ solo. Great track. The Colour Out of Space is next and is a more uptempo track but also strong on the melodic progressive spacey vibe as well. This like most of the record is instrumental and primarily features a lot of synthesizer solos and much fewer guitar solos. There is some great synthesizer work on this track. Surya, starts off with a harpsichord and then moves into the direction of soundtrack music for Dario Argento but perhaps a bit more happy but also a bit haunting. Lovely short track. Distant Star is a very spacey track with some nice slide guitar work and some melodies that remind me a lot of SEID. The Mountains of Madness sounds a lot like songs that preceded it and is the first track to features male lead vocals (Burt?). Some of the guitar work is very David Gilmour inspired. The CD/LP ends with another long track called R’Lyeh, which is split into multiple parts. This has some of the most dramatic music on the LP hidden in this piece. If you like really melodic, floating space progressive rock with a lot of synthesizers, you should enjoy this a lot. If you have not figured out this record is very much inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft

Description/Reviews
Sleeping Pulse is the name of the musical collaboration of Mick Moss (Antimatter) and the Portuguese Luís Fazendeiro (Painted Black). While Moss is solely concentrating on lyrics and vocal lines here, all music is penned by Fazendeiro. With their debut "Under The Same Sky", they create a multi-faceted, modern Rock album that deftly covers the range from a solid, progressive backbone to fragile acoustic passages, electronic elements and soulful string arrangements. It was mixed and mastered by Daniel Cardoso (Anathema), who gave the album a clear and nuanced, yet always vibrant sound.
Despite its musical diversity, "Under The Same Sky" appears homogenous at all times thanks to the perfectly staged voice of Mick Moss, who on this album almost certainly delivers his most colourful vocal performance to date. On the textual level, Moss once more deals with the abysses of the human soul and grounds his lyrics on an elaborate concept about sociopathic manipulation.

Rafał Żak

Description/Reviews
The album is artist’s commentary on modern society in the context of Facebook. People use it to share the most intricate details of their lives, and now Rafał Żak wants them to do the same with the album - to #ShareItAll using BitTorrent file distribution system. Ten tracks sum into nearly an hour of intense musical journey that takes the listener through a full cycle of social experience, which is Facebook’s main promise. Post-progressive character of the record blurs the boundaries between many musical genres, from classic rock, through ambient, classical music, jazz, electronic, industrial and modern metal.
#I’mNotAddicted is available for free (under the Creative Commons License), in four different digital formats. Distribution is handled in an innovatory way, which has a lot to do with the subject of this concept album.

Description/Reviews
Hochofen is a highly cerebral record with a strong electronic kraut accent. As the album goes by, sonic landscapes are drawn as in a train trip; sitting by the window the listener watches the landscapes move and blur into each other. The album is full of refined and tense sounds; a grey, rusted air. It's an intriguing sonic journey, with an exotic beauty, and sometimes bizarre moments.

Description/Reviews
On their debut album the band displays a relentless lust for experimenting. From the beautiful “The Last One” to the gritty “Electric Shock Therapy”, the band takes you on an unforgettable journey into worlds unknown; always with one foot in the danger zone. The music may be described as cinematic, dreamy, spacy, beautiful, ugly and dynamic with minimalistic elements and “over the top” full blown soundscapes. “Add some King Crimson, Black Sabbath, Richard Strauss and impressionist Claude Debussy and you have a pretty good picture of what it´s all about,” says bassist Jonas Reingold.

Description/Reviews
Upon initial listens to the record, I felt a lot of similar qualities to current Symphony X if taken through a Brainstorm meets Superior band template. The guitarists Thomas Rösch and Philipp Schönle like to end many of their riffs with little squeals and modern nuances, and the keyboard work has a flair for the dramatic - while vocalist /keyboardist Bastian Rose has a multi-layered voice that is very similar in tone, attitude, and strength as Russell Allen. Where I think Vanish differs from the Americans is their penchant for more straightforward parts in the majority of their songwriting, and less neo-classical arpeggio runs- but that's not to say they can't dazzle in their musical chemistry. Check out "Renewal" and the 9 minute tension filled "Curtain Call" for some superior guitar/ keyboard/ bass/ drum fusion and point/ counterpoint elements.

Description/Reviews
For the many permutations ‘post-metal’ tends to wind up with, progressive oddly isn’t that high on the list. Maybe it’s the post-metal staples of lumbering pace or the need to express darker moods. Whatever the cause, it makes Minoans all the more surprising in how well it’s executed the way it is. While embodying the best elements of the post-metal tag (minus the aimless suck, for aside from the opener most of these songs wrap up in 5 minutes), and meshing it with progressive exaltations. All in all it’s not terribly dissimilar from Ancestors, though again with an extreme focus on economy within each song.

Description/Reviews
The ultimate distinction between Enigma Opera Black and its predecessor can be boiled down to a single word: atmosphere. Whereas The Shadows Compendium tended to play out as a more direct, less ornamented exercise of Stéphan’s instrumental prowess, here the music has taken a turn towards a far darker, at times somewhat oppressive nature that proves quite palpable in its execution. Immensely haunting even in comparison to previous Adagio work, a more apt comparison would likely be to that of Beyond Twilight’s material, or other such acts sporting similar degrees of unsettling ambiance. In fact, all Forté would have had to do was write some vocal lines for Kelly to sing, and you’d have little difficulty convincing me this was the latest release from the twisted imagination of Finn Zierler. It’s obviously no coincidence the release of this album comes so close to Halloween, as the eerie nature of Forté’s leads combined with increased keyboard presence do well to conjure images of ghoulish faces and agonizing treks down a long dark hallway all too easily.

Description/Reviews
”Grave”, ”machine” and ”excavator” - Gravmaskin is a play on the Swedish translations for these three words, and when listening to the trio's instrumental rock its moniker makes perfect sense. The music paints a picture of a ”grave machine” - a mechanical entity fueled by driving beats and haunting melodies, digging tombs in the airy forest, next to a roaring motorway. Something cold and mechanical married to nature and her cycles of life and death. Because at first glance, Gravmaskin's music might pull instant associations to classic Italian horror soundscapes and dreamy German psychedelia (the band cite Goblin, NEU! and Tangerine Dream as three of their main influences, alongside smoke, freeways and the Swedish nature reserve Hågadalen). But when looking further, descending over it is a funeral mist of something undeniably Scandinavian – that soul stripping melancholia present in Bathory and Bo Hansson alike – and a raw, jangly punk execution giving it groove, nerve and a speed-paced pulse.

Description/Reviews
45 minutes of modern and original extreme metal crossing many genre boundaries, including influences from progressive and technical metal. The spectrum of Holotropic stretches from fast, technical, insane-sounding riffs, through hard hitting heavy parts to slower, more atmospheric, melodic and even oriental moments. "Permeate" is a concept record, musically and lyrically, drawing from the nature of change, broadening of horizons, psychonautics as well as scientific theories from psychology, behavioral science and psychiatry.

Description/Reviews
Picking up right were they left off with Epicloud, Devin Townsend Project takes you through a roller coaster of emotions. Keeping it as heavy as possible at times while still mixing it up as the group is known to do, mostly to keep the audience on the edge of their seats upon first listen. The remaining thousands upon thousands of listens this album will receive you’ll be singing along just like a teeny bopper at the One Direction concert.

Description/Reviews
While the atmosphere is similarly stifling and the music obviously draws on the same sort of relentless hardcore punishment delivered by the above-mentioned bands, I would more closely compare Generation of Vipers with Neurosis, early ISIS, and even Intronaut. Most of their songs dominate the middle range of the tempo spectrum, allowing the percussion work and guitar and bass riffs to actually be heard and appreciated. Dark, static-infused ambient drone textures fill out the mix.

Description/Reviews
The band may label their sound as thrash metal, but that is only partially right. While the music offers thrashing riffs and pummeling grooves, there is a lot going on; from rich melodies to hook-laden choruses to epic chord progressions. One might inclined to describe this as melodic thrash, but Arx throws just enough crushing heaviness throughout The Speed of Dark to defy the tag. At over an hour long, the band juggles enough variation to keep things interesting, from the spacey, psyscheldic soloing on “What Could’ve Been” to the epic pacing of the title track; it should suffice to say that it’s not all windmilling, headbanging thrash metal. Chugging thrash riffs collide with moody atmospheric passages and drop into melodic licks; constantly changing gears and keeping the listener on their toes.

Description/Reviews
After the claustrophobic darkness of the previous two tracks, the opening to ‘long live the night’ proves something of a relief with its gentle acoustic work and folk elements, not to mention some stunning slide work. Of all the tracks here, ‘long live the night’ is the one that most captures the feel of vintage Pink Floyd with its rich, lyrical feel and stunning musicianship and if you were to only preview one track from this album before taking the inevitable decision to purchase it, then this should probably be the one. A piece of work that evolves from humble origins into a full-on progressive epic, ‘long live the night’ is a truly wondrous piece of work that draws the listener headlong into Doug Harrison’s wonderfully diverse world. This is grandiose, theatrically-inclined progressive rock at its finest and if any artist has ever truly captured that wonderful mixture of excess that abounded in the heady days of the Gabriel-led Genesis, the Waters-led Floyd and King Crimson, then it is Doug Harrison with this stunningly inventive piece of music. More of a symphony than a song, ‘Long live the night’ is a stunning musical endeavour with a powerful anti-war message and a deft use of light and shade that sees it swell to a stunning crescendo awash with the sound of battle and crushing riffs.

Description/Review
On this record the mighty walls of Tool’s guitar sound meet the driving rhythms of Rush and gently merge with sophisticated arrangements that resemble the delicacy of Porcupine Tree. The Jeff Buckley-esque jazzy elegance provides the music with the final ingredient that completes the fused aesthetic of the old and the new.

In order to make this album the comprehensive experience that it has ultimately become, Phi have created and implemented a textual concept in which the discourse on music’s role, its significance, its drift into banality and the corresponding deterioration in value in today’s society functions as a backdrop for a both detailed as well as cynical analysis of major issues. The enormously powerful message of this album lies in the fusion of emotion and the coolness of the intellectual: art is so much more than only a mere product. ‘Now The Waves Of Sound Remain’ challenges the boundaries: this is music with a ‘double bottom’.
